0:23 your support for this line of inquiry
0:26 that drives me to make more of this
0:28 content for you
0:31 for thousands of years people have gazed
0:33 upward to marvel at the size and
0:36 grandeur of the great pyramid pondering
0:38 how such an enormous stone structure
0:41 could have been made by human hands the
0:44 ravages of time and greed have stripped
0:46 the pyramid of its valuable white casing
0:49 stones
0:50 laying bare the outer core backing
0:52 stones which give the structure its
0:54 rigidity and strength
0:56 the weathering of these blocks and their
0:58 somewhat irregular horizontal spacing
1:01 make it difficult to infer much about
1:03 the pyramid's construction at a glance
1:06 fortunately the past decades have
1:08 brought a renaissance of technology that
1:10 allows everyone around the world to get
1:12 an up-close look at the pyramids we are
1:15 no longer limited to the low resolution
1:18 and wide-angle photographs that populate
1:20 egyptology textbooks
1:22 anyone can search online for beautiful
1:24 and detailed images of the pyramids to
1:27 satisfy their own curiosity
1:29 a key innovation has been aerial drones
1:32 which can photograph the structures from
1:34 above up close at any conceivable angle
1:38 no longer confined to the desert floor
1:41 we can gaze down at the pyramids from up
1:43 high and appreciate their beauty from
1:45 this unique perspective
1:47 there was a time not so long ago when
1:49 intrepid tourists were allowed to climb
1:52 the great pyramid
1:53 but this practice is now forbidden so
1:55 drone photography is the only way the
1:58 general public can inspect its summit
2:00 for themselves
2:02 a favorite exercise of mine is finding
2:05 an exceptional image of a pyramid
2:07 complex and to just sit back and search
2:09 for patterns or details that might
2:12 easily be overlooked
2:14 these subtle clues can sometimes be
2:16 profoundly revealing and i want to share
2:19 that experience with all of you in this
2:21 channel's premiere video
2:23 here we see a series of photographs
2:26 taken directly above the apex of the
2:28 great pyramid
2:30 this allows us to easily inspect the
2:32 design for symmetry
2:34 because anomalous blocks will stand out
2:36 much better
2:37 as the images get closer various details
2:40 come into focus and you can appreciate
2:43 all of the history written into the
2:45 limestone the graffiti of travelers from
2:47 thousands of years
2:49 the beveled surfaces which give the
2:51 stones lateral stability and bore holes
2:53 which may anchor modern climbing
2:55 equipment or perhaps assisted with
2:58 original scaffolding these particular
3:01 photos have been digitally modified to
3:03 increase contrast which allows us to
3:05 make out each individual block at the
3:08 peak quite clearly also the metal frame
3:11 which marks the pyramid's original apex
3:13 has been removed so as not to distract
3:15 the eye
3:16 there is a single block at the summit
3:18 which appears quite dark but i'm fairly
3:20 confident this is not because the stone
3:22 is a different composition
3:24 other pictures suggest it is simply
3:26 stained perhaps by fire or some other
3:29 man-made cause i've never read any
3:31 account of a rogue granite block on top
3:33 of the great pyramid but if anyone has
3:36 details about this please leave a
3:38 comment below let's pull back a bit and
3:40 get all of the summit blocks into frame
3:43 from here we can inspect the entire top
3:45 level and it is from this view that i
3:47 want to give you an opportunity to make
3:50 the discovery for yourself
3:52 there is a secret embedded in these
3:54 stones which reveals much about how the
3:57 top of the pyramid was constructed and
3:59 perhaps even the entire monument
4:02 don't cheat yourself out of the chance
4:04 to figure it out on your own
4:06 pause the video here
4:08 make it full frame and give it some
4:10 thought
4:12 if you're still with me and not yet
4:14 convinced you can do it on your own i'll
4:16 give you a clue
4:17 pay close attention to the direction
4:19 every stone is facing
4:22 are they simply a jumble of roughly
4:24 squared blocks or is there a pattern to
4:26 how they are laid out relative to one
4:29 another
4:30 see anything yet
4:32 i'll give one final hint before i reveal
4:34 the answer
4:36 and that is to notice if there's
4:37 anything different between the outermost
4:39 stones and the ones in the middle
4:42 okay now it's time for the reveal
4:46 here at the flattened summit of the
4:47 great pyramid you will notice that the
4:49 perimeter stones are all perfectly
4:51 aligned to the superstructure with their
4:53 faces closely matching the cardinal
4:55 directions laid out by the monument
4:58 but all of the inner stones are not
5:00 quite so perfectly aligned they all
5:02 share a common clockwise turn by 5 to 10
5:06 degrees
5:07 it's very easy to see here with the
5:09 stones highlighted in different shades
5:11 and their joints emphasized by the lines
5:13 in yellow
5:15 did you see the pattern before the
5:16 reveal leave a comment below and tell me
5:19 if you got it right or what else might
5:21 have drawn your eye
5:23 so what does this alignment pattern tell
5:25 us about the great pyramid what reason
5:27 could there be for having all of the
5:29 inner stones turned slightly clockwise
5:32 well it suggests that when laying down
5:34 the center the perimeter blocks were
5:36 obscured by a spiraling ramp and that
5:39 these middle stones were instead aligned
5:41 to the ramp rather than the faces of the
5:43 pyramid notice how each of the perfectly
5:46 straight perimeter stones get deeper as
5:48 they approach a corner all in the same
5:50 clockwise direction
5:52 the easiest way to line up roughly
5:54 squared blocks is from an edge and the
5:57 inner stones are straight relative to
5:59 the edge of a spiraling ramp
6:02 not the outer pyramid faces
6:04 this is very strong evidence that a
6:06 spiral ramp structure was used at the
6:08 top of the gray pyramid and any theory
6:11 about the pyramid's construction should
6:13 reflect the masonry design we see here
6:16 there have been many pyramid
6:17 construction ideas put forth but few of
6:19 them align with evidence we can see in
6:21 this photo it cannot yet be determined
6:24 how many courses of the pyramid were
6:25 made in this way but once a building
6:27 technique is observed the likelihood of
6:30 seeing it elsewhere is dramatically
6:32 higher
6:33 here is a famous microgravimetry study
6:36 of the great pyramid made in 1986 which
6:38 suggests that there is a terrorist-like
6:40 density that is fairly symmetrical
6:42 leading to the summit professor of
6:45 mechanics h.d
6:47 wrote an in-depth analysis of the
6:49 density data in his 2011 book imaging
6:52 the cheop's pyramid his conclusion was
6:55 that there wasn't enough data to be
6:57 certain if the density suggested an
6:59 internal ramp such as the one proposed
7:01 by jean-pierre hudan or an external ramp
7:04 system that many theorists propose with
7:07 various iterations
7:09 i'm particularly intrigued by the idea
7:11 that all the pyramids of the fourth
7:13 dynasty were constructed in distinct
7:16 stages similar to the consensus about
7:18 how the first true pyramid in my doom
7:21 was built
7:22 the idea is that a core stepped pyramid
7:25 is built first and then afterwards a
7:27 true angular pyramid is finished over
7:30 the top
7:31 you can see evidence for this method of
7:33 construction in the menkare pyramid
7:35 which is the last large pyramid built at
7:37 giza
7:38 with an enormous excavated trench in the
7:41 center of its northern side you can get
7:43 a clear look at the inner structure of
7:44 the monument
7:46 within this great breach there are
7:48 finely squared blocks behind the outer
7:50 core that are only slightly offset from
7:52 a vertical alignment
7:54 this precision work behind a rough fill
7:56 layer is indicative of multiple stages
7:59 of construction
8:01 many queen's pyramids at giza have a
8:03 visibly stepped structure but it remains
8:05 unresolved if two of mankari's minor
8:08 pyramids were clad in white tour
8:10 limestone to form true pyramids
8:12 no evidence of casing stones for them
8:14 has ever been found
8:16 the usual explanation of unfinished work
8:19 is given for this absence of masonry
8:21 and this convenient excuse is provided
8:24 for just about every anomaly in
8:26 mankari's pyramid complex
8:29 amusingly some historical authors
8:31 writing about the great pyramid also
8:33 assumed it was unfinished due to the
8:35 missing top 8 meters of stone at the
8:37 summit
8:38 i doubt many researchers today would
8:40 agree with that analysis it's a great
8:43 reminder that those who follow in your
8:45 footsteps may find clues that for you
8:47 were entirely elusive
8:49 in closing my key takeaway from
8:51 examining the summit blocks of the great
8:53 pyramid is that if a construction theory
8:55 doesn't account for the change in
8:57 alignment between the inner core blocks
8:59 and the outer core backing stones
9:02 well it probably shouldn't be taken
9:04 seriously
9:05 there is still much to learn about the
9:07 construction of the great pyramid
9:09 and this piece of evidence is an
9:10 essential clue to unravel the mystery
